Background Information
National Safeguarding Adults Review (SAR) recommendations have highlighted the complexities of achieving effective engagement between practitioners and people experiencing homelessness. This session has been developed to raise awareness of the responsibilities of housing authorities in the context of preventing and relieving homelessness. The session is delivered by members of Oldham Council’s Housing Options Team and will focus on how practitioners from all agencies and organisations in Oldham can support the people they are working with.

Training Aims and Objectives
The session aims to equip practitioners with knowledge and awareness of homelessness legislation and the process a customer would experience should they approach the Council’s Homelessness Services. The purpose of the session is to raise awareness of the OSAB Homelessness Practitioner Guidance; homelessness legislation; and the roles and responsibilities of the Local Authority including how this looks in practice. By the end of this session, you will understand:

  • The statutory duties the Local Authority have to a person experiencing homelessness
  • The needs and risks considered within Homelessness assessments, determining priority need
  • Details about working in partnership and when to refer to adult safeguarding.
